Silent Auction- "Purchasing Power"

“Purchasing Power”
Mendy Mills

"Purchasing Power" is meant to show how our appetite for "things" affects the world; from pollution and child labor to our own relationships and health.  As consumers we are very powerful and vulnerable.  We are influenced by marketing through media to be consumers, to buy stuff all the time - stupid stuff like salad shooters and high heels.  We blow up or burn down entire forests to make stuff like finger nail polish and bedazzled phone cases.  We poison farmland downriver while making acid washed jeans - so we can wear new jeans that look worn. Who are the marginalized and displaced?  How about the earth?  How about human beings worth only their labor?  How about us as consumers - encouraged, dare I say programmed, to find happiness in things, rather than in the abundance we already have.
